Print production case study. CD cover and Magazine advert. How do they suit and engage their audience.

Arctic Monkeys single Brianstorm released in 2007 featuring four tracks. whats significant about this single and cd cover and advert is that there is a new logo for the Arctic Monkeys, one in which is brand new which almost differentiated the older fans of Arctic Monkeys to the newer ones in this case, as they changed their logo and to the audience might have changed the way they perform. However this song was part of their second album, meaning that they had success enough on their first one to create a second album, the change in logo design and overall design of their band means that they might have been trying to cater for a more wider audience or a new audience altogether. The song itself is unlike any they had done before it was a lot more dynamic and evolved than before as such they needed to evolve their logo and overall design of the band.
The covers suit the band as the genre of indie rock is seen via the use the text; the font is portrayed in the way that it suits the song name, with "Storm" being a focal point and there is artistic portrayals within the letters T, giving it a more relatable approach to the audience.

The images for both the cover and the poster as vibrant in their cinematography, therefore are quite visually appealing. The audience would be engaged by the visuals by being engaged with the colour contradictions and visual designs. of which will attract audiences.  the font used in the poster and the CD cover are reminiscent of a lighting storm, the articulated imagery of the font makes it a lot more appealing for the viewer and they suit a more rock or punk genre; meaning it would appeal to these types of people more so than appealing to those who love pop music,

evaluations of Print productions (Brief evaluations)

Initially my original idea for the print production front cover.
i disliked the sheer weird glossiness of it and it really didn't fit the genre i was going for at all and it simply didn't cut it for the final print production basic model.

The back cover of my idea is eye catching and is relatively easy to read and it overall suits the genre and looks to be like something that would look good as a final package for the cd case. the only downside to it to me is the cluster of colours and lights reflecting around, there are a bit too many in my opinion but it does suit the genre and have the emotional encoding i wanted to put in it.

the front cover of my print productions is simple in its design but complex in its geometry, its weird angles and colours all make it that much more intriguing to look at; along with the relationship built up by using the lonely road name literally within it. my biggest flop on this is the fact that there is no where to put other details within it, the image is simply full and photoshopping anything into it simply doesn't work and therefore it lacks any human life or life at all.

The left panel of my print production is the same for the right however it includes the first line of text from the music video, in whihc seems to not fit too well but it does add a more dramatic effect, however i think if i used this one as my right hand panel it would have been better as the CD would have covered it and therefore when the disc is removed from the case the owner is greeted to by the dark and gloomy emotional text. the angles and colours are all very weird the top part gives a more hypnotic effect to the whole thing almost as if whats up there doesn't exist.

The other panel is weird too just like its other side, however together they create a really nice patter in which links to the genre and the music video and the lyrics as well as linking thematically, the overall inside covers portray the sheer lonliness and sadness i tried to incorporate but then introduces the effect of there being two different roads to go down. i could have improved upon this by making it seem like one half was like this and the other was a more lively one however with the filtering i dont think it would suit too well regarding people on the filter seem to look horrific.

development of print productions (Final print production)

The CD front cover is now almost finalised now including a title to the album and small contrast fixes have been applied.
The contrasting colours and the bold highlights make the cover eye catching in appearance.

The inside covers are identical in appearance but one has been flipped and inserted to create a mirrored street effect
The right side would contain the CD while the right hand side would contain any booklet/adverts needed within the retail packaging.
The back cover is a unique take on the rest of the room by production being of a puddle of water not of a road this is due to the portrayal of emptiness I wanted to show

prelim print production ideas

A very rough alternate take.
the background would be a lot more polished and would be distinct, the idea is to have a graffiti looking background with the 4Kicks logo in the centre the insides and back covers would just be the background repeated, with the back cover being covered in text.
the text wouldn't be the black bold text shown here is would be similar but would be in the style of the font below. This idea orignated from a graffiti style that I saw, it colours and it when polished up would look consistent and eye catching. This would suit the persona of the band , being a bit rough. The background would if this was to be finished would be sleek and smooth but the text would be a lot lot more styleised.

This design is a lot more polished than the one above being a lot more distinct in its design. the design is a massively modified image of a field during sunset. The design is a rough one with no real detail to it with the cover being mostly one image, the field. This as a front cover will look alright but if it was duplicated it wouldn't look at all good. The cover is however a bit boring and has no real link towards my genre and it's just unsuiting of a cover.

This design takes on a more urban look with a run down building being the focal point of the image overlooking a canal. This cover is highly detailed and a little bit messy but the levels of contrast are completely editable meaning it would be easy to touch up the image to make it less vivid. However the urban theme from pit bands persona is shown within this image.

The lower image is one of a puddle of water and a reflection of a tree. The image has been edited with a filter much like the one above it which gives it a eye catching effect. The image would suit the inside covers of the jewel case or the poster as long as the overall font doesn't intrude upon the looks and fits in. These covers would fit perfectly into the indie rock theme and would look eye catching as well as suit the font.
This is another take upon the one above as the colours made the cover seem a lot more intriguing than the one above due to the huge variety of colour and overall angles and designs. it is however too bright to insert the title over as it looks slightly off and hidden.

Logos

The logos
The logos were scrapped during the print production stage due to the font being more suited for the band logo themselves. Below are the rough drafts for a logo, they are not used within the final production simply because the use of a logo would be too complex to fit within my desired final production and that the font would look better fitting.
As the font i used gives more portrayal to the band and causes the band to become a lot more realistic and not dependant upon a logo to portray them within media texts.

This is the final logo design i came up with, its simple yet effective and portrays a more indie rock feel to it rather than having an individual logo attached to it.

Fonts

This Font is freehand in its appearance and looks like it has been done by the use of marker pens which links to our band as they are fairly rough and freehand in how they act as a band.
4kicks shows very nicely with the font as well being not too odd and different and is overall good looking as a rough graffiti style.
The font has connotations of being slightly slap dash or being a little bland which however suits our band overall.
However is font is perfect for the style of the band and the genre. And it can be recoloured and downloaded for free. The band would be portrayed as a very indie and relatively expressive band due to its goofy style.

This font is rough in its typography and seems like it’s written in cheap graffiti and looks like it would be found in suburban towns and cities.

The fonts colour is the generic black however this amplifies its connotations as a rough and disorganised and potentially rebellious. This font relates to our band by using the rough effect as our band isn’t big and known as such the band name would look much like that. All of the test is in capital letters and all somewhat bold which creates the rough look.
however the font itself has no placeholder for the number 4 as such if this font was to be used it would have to be able to be edited in some way to allow for the number to be shown.
The band in this case wouldn't be able to really show anything other than the fact that their own number 4 wouldn't be able to be shown within their fonts.

This font looks like a well worn text in which has been watered down.
It has connotations of being very rough and well worn.
However this font cannot be used for the print production due to it being one in which you have to pay to use.
Plane crash is an odd font being rather horror movie like in its appearance it's rough erased style makes it suitable for a indie rock band. It also is bold and stylised so it would look very good on the album cover and as song names and the like. However its slightly cheesy in appearance and looks more like an indie action movies title card font and might not be suitable for an indie rock band.
Levi Brush is a weirdly adaptable font, it suits rap music as well as rock music and would cater well to pop due to its overall graffiti like style. It wouldn't really fit our music video and would seem a bit too arty of a font as such is would look out of place within the confines of our band. This font would suit more of a punk album due to its blood splatter effect within.

Potential images for print production (Initial ideas)

Background images for print production
Due to the grungy and fairly dull theme presented within our music video and how dull our song is using dull and grey scale imagery would suit our band and our song choice particularity well.
I tired capturing all the photos with empty and blank areas with nothing much to really look at due to the hopelessness shown within the song choice and that the genre of indie rock suits a more dull.
outlook.

The use of an urban setting is representative of the genre of indie rock; as the majority of indie rock bands live or perform in an urban environment. Urban environments also offer a lot more in the way of visually portraying glumness in which within the music video is one of the key themes, as such the images of Norwich city would be a great fit into the print productions as it would make the band more alive in terms of where they actually are, being not just in a garden shed singing.

An old factory in which lies dormant on the river edge being graffiti'd and forgotten about, some of the references towards the music video

This picture of a giant puddle around the Nottcuts parking area is symbolic as a dull gloomy place much like the emotions featured in the music video.
This specific image was captured by me while i was on the way home at night, its the old Norwich hospital and i thought it would look good as an image with a lot of emotion behind it. Hospitals can be a place of loss and life but also a symbol of hope, as such i thought of ways to implement this emotional feeling onto the print productions somehow.

The reflection of a tree symbolising life onto a puddle in which represents gloominess and sadness, some contradictions between the items in the image. all of which are reflective of my music videos emotional portrayals.

Costumes

Cast

Location for music video

We decided to have the main performance in a garden shed this is not typical of this genre but it is similar to some music videos in the indie rock genre, such as the Kings of Leon songs; 'Sex on Fire' and 'Pyro'. The garden shed is an easily accessible location which we can use and is easy for us to change around and create an atmosphere that we want through easy control of lighting and a good amount of space. The logistics of the garden make it easy for us to control lighting and use a wide variety of shots.
The narrative will be set in a suburban area this is a common with in this genre. Shot in Norwich and the surrounding areas such as Anglia square and the area around the bottom of the market to give the music video the authentic suburban look.

Plan of music video's timeline

00:00-00:05- master shot of band

00:05-00:41 narrative, then breaks up with cut to first band shot.

00:41-00:55 band shots

00:55-01:20 narrative- girl walking out on boy

01:20-01:27 band shots

01:27-01:33 shot of boy and girls

01:33-01:46 band shots

01:46-01:

overall the narrative will go:
* Break up
* Pictures of them
* Flash backs / Walk and see girl with another person
* Breaks stuff

Case Study Genre in Tinie Tempah's Written in the stars

Tinie Tempah's 'written in the stars' was first uploaded onto YouTube on the 14th of August 2010, on his official YouTube channel. This particular song was extremely successful reaching mid and above in the charts.
Tinie Tempah is an English rapper first really introduced into the spotlight in 2010 with his release of Written in the stars.

The music video for written in the stars features many conventions of the rap genre, this is highly evident in the first couple of seconds as it opens with Tinie standing on the the rooftops of a suburban town. This is a really simple convention as Rap has connotations of fearlessness and disobedience. The singer is fearless and confident in himself and standing tall above others seems to amplify it. the second feature of the video being a rap one is that Tinie is wearing fairly expensive and smart casual clothing, a leather jacket showing that whoever is singing this is a big shot in his world. His posture is that of someone who doesn't really care he commands the screen, he is the most important person there.
This video falls under Gangsta rap as a potential genre as its focus upon clothing style on the main singer, its fancy and sophisticated but the lyrics are rebellious and Tinies actions are shown with no remorse, he does what he wants.
However the conventions of rap are broken shortly after this shot, it cuts to a white room with a man playing the piano, something in which is complete different from what you'd expect a rap video to contain, the white room is also a very odd item to have in the video as it as well doesn't fit the previous suburban theme. Its simplicity and relative calmness is completely different from the run down grey landscape we saw before.

however the conventions of rap are reintroduced shortly after when we get more Tinie and this time is more animated, he performs multiple overly dramatic actions such as the one pictured below however its a fairly long shot and rap normally has close ups or shots that are closer up of the lead singer, this seems to both use and break that convention by having him always in shot but be slightly further away and off set a little from the centre. This continues all throughout the video and it rarely cuts to a proper close up of him, it tends to stick to a wide shot when he is singing.

Goodwins theory of music videos is correct for this video, it focuses on performance and highlights the main singers and advertises them in a fashion that makes them look "cool" or "modern"
The Lyrics also link with the visuals but it is a broken link as he is singing in dusk or early morning, not night as the lyrics suggest, however this could also be a using the lyrics in a unique way.

The music video contains a narrative, its fractured and is only shown in short snippets but a narrative is included within the video, however its meaning is simple a child going through a lot of problems, with parents and lifes typical issues and the lyrics in a stylised way show that the child fate is written in the stars and just needs discovered or yelled out.

The colours in the video are colourful and vivid and as the music video goes on the energy portrayed gets more and more apparent which is challenging conventions as rap is normally full of energy throughout this one builds that energy and releases it on the verses and nearer the end.

Tinie Tempahs other videos such as "not letting go" also follow rap conventions as no real cares and a lot of close ups of the main singer and over exaggerated movements. All of Tinies videos are live performances and performances in general which makes the genre he fits into more repeatable to rap or gangsta.
Written in the stars tends to focus upon the lyrics moreso than the video which is and isnt a convention of rap music, on one hand a performance is vital to portray the rap energy, while focusing on the lyrics make it a more enumerable song.

in all the video portrays most conventions of rap music and does change and alter some aspects of them. this video could fall under gangsta rap sub genre but majority of the time it fits securely into Rap.

Possible song choices

4Kicks
"I never get lost by your side"
The only known source of the song is on Unsigned.com and not much of this band is available.
Advantages:
Infinite in its music video opportunities, its a song that can be used for pretty much anything but seems to be best suited for a dark gritty video.
easy to follow, the lyrics are not too confusing and its easy to learnt the beat
catchy beat, the beat behind the song is catchy and upbeat
recording quality is pretty good
Disadvantages:
Lyrics are not too good, a bit dull
The lyrics seem to have no relation to the songs name whatsoever
Only one source of the song exists.
song lyrics are sometimes faded out

1984

"Green Eyed Monster"
http://www.unsigned.com/1984
Advantages:
The song itself has a relatively good beat to it and as such would be easy to put together a music video to it.
the recording quality is okay
it would be easy to write a narrative for the song
Disadvantages:
The songs lyrics are not particularly good and the songs structure is a little dull and boring
the overall presentation of the song is boring and drags on.

Analysis of media language in a music video

Heathens by Twenty One Pilots is an extremely wierdly designed music video, incorporating both Suicide Squad movie footage and footage from the band themselves. However the two seem to link extremely well, there are cuts between the two that happen very quickly and are almost not recognisable. In one section the security camera system is framed so it looks like there are many more cameras next to it and in the next shot shows movie footage almost effortlessly. This in all portrays a more relocatable feel to the video, its extremely obvious that this prison is full of mad people, the portrayal of madness is effortlessly shown in the video within mere seconds.
the colour palette is dull, almost all grey scale including the jumpsuits used by the inmates this in itself portrays a dark atmosphere to the video, its dark its dangerous.
